Since recently quitting my job I’ve been trying to figure out my LinkedIn “headline” (it’s actually a required profile field). For many people it’s their current job title, their purpose statement, or a short description of their work. However, for those of us who are in between “what was” and “what will be”, it can be challenging.
We’re essentially trying to answer the question asked at networking events and parties since the ice age, “So, what do you do?”. Over the last few months I’ve answered this question variously with “taking a break”, “on hiatus”, “experimenting with not working”, and others. But the truth is I do lots of things. I take my kids to school and go for lunch with my wife and take our dogs on long walks. I stay active and meditate and read and listen to podcasts and watch Netflix. I meet new people and build my network and keep myself open to new opportunities (a big part of why I’m on LinkedIn).
The realization I’ve finally come to is that it’s ok to simply BE for a while and DO a lot of different things. It’s ok to BE in the moment, BE in the present, and EXPERIENCE the excitement and uncertainty that comes with seeking out my next great headline for LinkedIn.
